Ne nje permbledhje me ese mbi depresionin (Unholy Ghost: writers on depression), autoria e librit autobiografik“Girl Interupted” (qe eshte bere edhe film) Susanna Kaysen shkruan:


“The worst thing about depression-the thing that makes people phobic about it-is that it’s a foretaste of death. It’s a trip to the country of nothingness. Reality loses its substance and becomes ghostly, transparent, unbelievable. The perception of what’s outside infects the perception of the self, which explains why depressed people feel they aren’t “there.”
This tells us something important about what it means to be “there.” It means believing the evidence of our senses, believing in heat and cold and hunger and smoothness and sexual desire. What philosophers the melancholics are, positing a world in which a tree doesn’t make a noise even when it falls right in front of your face!..”

“The melancholic temperament is equipped to perceive and, more important, to tolerate the fundamental ambiguities of life. The transient nature of happiness, beauty, success, and health may come as shock to the upbeat person but it’s old hat to the depressive. And, I think depressive people have more fun. Human nature being what it is, we enjoy more whatever is hard to get and in short supply. Happiness is certainly both, and nobody knows that better than someone who spends half the time sunk in gloom.”
