Cambridge, June 16, 2006, 8pm – The Greek Institute is sponsoring internationally acclaimed
Greek tenor and Sony Classical recording artist, Mario Frangoulis in a concert on June 16, 2006 at Sanders Theatre, Harvard University. Leading musicians from the Boston Esplanade Pops Orchestra, the Boston Lyric Opera and the Handel and Haydn Society will be accompanying him. There will also be several world-class Greek musicians performing. Porter Anderson, the music critic from CNN says of Frangoulis, “his world is distilled to pure sound, all voice.”
The Greek Institute, a 501(c)3 non-profit Greek cultural and educational center, has been in existence in Cambridge since 1988. Its mission is "to create a greater awareness and understanding of the extraordinary achievements of Greek culture from antiquity to the present."
All proceeds will benefit the major initiatives of The Greek Institute: classes in all aspects of the Greek language and culture, the author, lecture, film and music series, art exhibitions, publications, sponsored educational trips to Greece, and the installation of the Thesavros – Treasure of the Greek Language Project at the Greek Institute – a monumental undertaking for the preservation and digitization of the Greek language and literature from Homer to the present.
Mario Frangoulis studied violin and even composed songs when he was a young boy. At the age of 17, he was sent to London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and played leading roles in Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End. While there, he auditioned and won the Maria Callas Prize and went to New York’s prestigious Juilliard School of Music as a scholarship student. His pursuits won him the support and counsel of such operatic legends as Alfredo Kraus and Marilyn Horne. He was the only private student the late Kraus ever accepted, and traveled all over the world with Kraus as his protégé, giving him a solid vocal technique and good high notes, both hallmarks of Kraus’s style.
Frangoulis has performed all over the world, at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala and in Broadway productions such as West Side Story and Grease as well as in Greek productions such as Aristophanes’ The Birds featuring the songs of Manos Hadjidakis in the ancient amphitheater at Epidaurus. The young tenor began recording for Sony Classical in 1998 and released his critically acclaimed first album, Sometimes I Dream in 2002. He subsequently released two CDs: another international recording, Follow Your Heart and a CD featuring young modern Greek composers, including himself, entitled The Garden of Wishes, released in 2005. He is one of the
featured singers in the recently released IMAX film Greece: Secrets of the Past, now being shown at The Museum of Science in Boston.
Mario Frangoulis sings in Greek, English, Spanish, Italian and French, reaching a broad audience, which is aligned with the mission and philosophy of The Greek Institute: to open the doors of Greek culture to anyone who wants to learn about the extraordinary civilization that has contributed so much to development of humankind. His messages of hope, love, and the power of the individual to realize his/her aspirations are recurrent in his music, and these messages are also at the heart of Greek culture. Frangoulis has consistently been in the top 3 in Billboard’s Classical Cross-Over charts with Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli. As one fan said after a recent performance, “Frangoulis sings opera like an opera singer and pop like a pop singer mastering each and every note to perfection.”
