Tirana International Airport "Mother Teresa"
Tirana International Airport "Mother Teresa" is the most important hub of transportation in Albania and the country's only international airport. In 2005, it was used by close on 785,000 passengers, 22 percent more than in the previous year. Since the 1990s, the airport has been developing positively, with above-average growth in passenger numbers. Since April 23, 2005, operational responsibility for the management of the airport has been in the hands of the newly established airport company Tirana Airport Partners SHPK (TAP). This follows the conclusion of the privatization agreement in October 2004. Within the framework of a BOOT concession, TAP will run the airport for the next 20 years. It has set itself the twin goals of optimizing the operation of the new airport and making it into one of Albania's most modern infrastructure facilities. The aim is to provide passengers and airlines alike smooth, reliable, first-class service. The construction measures have already been started. May 6, 2005, saw the laying of the foundation stone for the new passenger terminal and the new access road. In just two years' time, Tirana International Airport will have an entirely new look. The architecturally striking terminal will be able to handle more than one million passengers a year. The new facilities will be functional and provide exemplary support for Tirana's urban planning transformation.
