Trojani, to say that Architecture must be nearer to Art than to Engineering is like to say that Architecture must be nearer to “the man” than to “the machine”, and I think Architecture must be equilibrated. Architecture is putting the technique to the man’s service. Buildings built like boxes and made of cement, even if they are built with pieces of stars, “the material” doesn’t make Architecture being or not being nearer to the man; what make Archictecture being nearer to humanity is “the feeling” and “the objectives”. Allowing people to idealize, allowing people to imagine, to think, allowing happiness into a space, this is Architecture.
Well, I think historic centers have a tendency to disappeared with the construction of modern buildings, in part because modern society has different and new needs that old buildings can’t offer. I don’t know about other european cities, but for example here in Spain only 10% of the buildings in cities are historic buildings; that means that approximately 90% of the built territory is able to be constructed with new and modern buildings. Today a great part o Barcelona’s historical center city is being torn down because of bad building conditions. In spite of the fact that neighbours agreed to destroy their old buildings, they admitted that this would lead to a significant loss of historical architecture.
I believe that old buildings are like historical documents, like books where we can read about the history of a city. The old streets, the form in which the buildings were built, the materials that were used to build them, everything tells us something about ancient people who lived in that space, where millions of tourists walk today. I have walked through the historic center of Barcelona, also called “Gothic quarter”, and in my opinion the addition of new buildings close to historic ones is aweful. This is one of the reasons why I think architects should preserve and restore old and historic sections of cities in order to keep alive their own identity places and culture.
